Jan Neiger

Assistant Vice Provost for Academic Human Resources

Jan Alan Neiger joined the Office of Academic Affairs in 2016 as assistant vice provost, where he focuses on:  

  • academic policies and procedures 

  • faculty hiring initiatives, development, personnel processes, and conduct; training and leadership opportunities for faculty leaders 

  • academic integrity efforts, and  

  • conflicts of interest and ethics  

Within this role, Jan works closely with the university’s academic units and colleges and the Offices of Human Resources, Compliance, and Legal Affairs to help advance faculty eminence, forge collaborations and promote academic well-being and ethical behavior in support of faculty and staff. 

Jan began his legal career in higher education in 1996 at the Ohio Attorney General’s Office, where he served as assistant chief and chief of the Education Section. Before joining the Office of Academic Affairs, Jan served as associate general counsel at Ohio State and the University of Cincinnati, concentrating his legal efforts on faculty, student and research-related matters; political activities; open meetings and public records; and conflicts of interest and ethics. In his previous legal role and as well as his current position, Jan is a member of the National Association of College and University Attorneys, where he has presented on topics related to FERPA, ethics as part of compliance, and faculty misconduct. He also chaired the Journal of College and University Law Editorial Board. 

Jan is a member of the Big Ten Academic Alliance Department Executive Officer liaison team, which he currently chairs. He was also an adjunct lecturer with the College of Education and Human Ecology. He has published on various matters related to the First and Fourth Amendments on campus, academic freedom, student sexual harassment, and FERPA and public records.  

He received his B.A. and J.D. from The Ohio State University and his PhD in Higher Education Administration from Bowling Green State University.
