First Ohio State professor named CIFAR Azrieli Global Scholar
Melisa Diaz, an assistant professor in earth sciences and the principal investigator of the Polar and Environmental Geochemistry Lab at Ohio State, has been named a 2025–2027 CIFAR Azrieli Global Scholar. She is the first Ohio State scholar and one of only 12 researchers selected this year for this prestigious honor, which supports the next generation of research leaders tackling global challenges.
In 2023, Diaz was selected for the Provost’s Early Career Scholars Program, an initiative designed to attract and develop exceptionally promising, high-caliber faculty being recruited to Ohio State.
Promotion and tenure approvals 2025
Last month brought many Ohio State faculty members a reason to celebrate as the Board of Trustees approved promotion and tenure recommendations. Each has excelled in the areas of teaching, research and creative accomplishments, and service. Executive Vice President and Provost Ravi V. Bellamkonda and the Office of Academic Affairs is proud to recognize these achievements and contributions to the university.

Ohio State launches bold AI Fluency initiative to redefine learning and innovation
Ohio State has announced that, beginning this fall for first-year students, its AI Fluency initiative will embed artificial intelligence (AI) education into the core of every undergraduate curriculum. This bold endeavor will prepare students not only to use AI tools, but to understand, question and innovate with them — no matter their major. Learners will gain a holistic understanding of how AI intersects with various disciplines, empowering them to apply this knowledge innovatively within their major and fields of study.
SB 1 compliance updates
The “Advance Ohio Higher Education Act” (SB 1) will go into effect on June 27, 2025, though many provisions have delayed effective dates. Information and guidance about political and ideological restrictions, complaint and reporting processes, and partnerships with China are available on the SB 1 implementation webpage. Additional information will continue to be added to the site and shared with the university community as it is finalized.

Faculty recently named to Fulbright programs
Faculty from Ohio State recently have been named U.S. Fulbright Scholars and Specialists. They will conduct their Fulbright work across a wide range of countries.

Liang-Shih Fan awarded inaugural Agostini Prize
Liang-Shih Fan, Distinguished University Professor and C. John Easton Professor in Engineering in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, is the first recipient of the Pierre Agostini Prize at Ohio State. Fan’s research focuses on creating cleaner, more efficient ways to produce energy, fuels and chemicals while reducing pollution. The prize is Ohio State’s most prestigious honor for scholarly and artistic achievement.

The 2025 New Faculty Orientation will take place Aug. 20, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Ohio Union. New faculty can receive additional support year-round by attending ongoing topical workshops in the Faculty Pathways program throughout the academic year. Self-paced courses for Ohio State educators
This summer, the Michael V. Drake Institute for Teaching and Learning is offering three fully self-paced, online courses that are available to all who teach at Ohio State. Explore fundamental approaches to online teaching with Introduction to Teaching Online, take a deep dive into effective online course design with Course Design for Online Courses, or expand your learning technology toolkit with Technology-Enhanced Teaching . Courses are in BuckeyeLearn and Ohio State login is required.

Associated Press Campus Insights program
Participation in the Associated Press Campus Insights program elevates the research of Ohio State faculty and allows their work to be featured in homes around the world. Faculty participants are only responsible for a 15-minute on-camera interview with a communications team member. Ohio State’s participation in the AP Campus Insights program is supported by the Office of Marketing and Communications, the Office of Academic Affairs, the Enterprise for Research, Innovation, and Knowledge, and the Wexner Medical Center.
Promotion and Tenure Achievement Conference
The 2025 Promotion and Tenure Achievement Conference will be held on Thursday, Aug. 21, at the Ohio Union. More details, including registration and an agenda, will be available soon.
Faculty Pathways summer opportunities
Faculty Pathways is a comprehensive and innovative faculty development program designed to equip educators with the necessary tools, knowledge and support to excel in their roles at The Ohio State University. The next event will be on June 26 and titled "Transformative Information Literacy: Conceptualizing Information Literacy Through the Lens of Transformative Learning Theory."
